Re: D&D Convention Character Gen
Talking about this with a bunch of people in a bunch of different places (sidenote: I miss G+) I've come to the conclusion that I can't make D&D do what I want to do here. Oh well. I revise my plans and use pregens. *sigh* But I think the interesting discussions that I ended up having illuminate...

D&D Convention Character Gen
A group of friends and I are running all the RPGs at a local anime con. We pitched our games and were asked to run more D&D. I drew the short straw so I'm replacing my Dread game with 5e. That's not to say I have anything against D&D. 5e is a good game. But it's not my game and I'm not super...

Re: Blog Post--Naming Conventions as Setting Details
In a playtest, a player pointed out that I used one naming convention in the introductory setting text and then an entirely different one once the game began. OOPS! It was super obvious as something that needed changing but I didn't see it on my own. Consistency is important. Both naming convention ...

Re: Un-PbtAing Games
I think I would meet the problem half way and go with a D20 based PbtA. That way all the old school values and such would still apply to the rolls. You then have the GM act on failure as per PbtA. Well, call me prophetic, the kickstarter for Hyper Light Drifter: The Role Playing Game is doing exact...

Re: Un-PbtAing Games
Sure. I think there are 3 parts here. 1. What are the hallmarks of PbtA. These need to be removed. 2. What are the traits that make the game distinctive. These need to be preserved. 3. What are the hallmarks of OSR. These need to be injected (and married to the game's identifying traits). So pick a ...

Re: Un-PbtAing Games
Which parts of the OSR styled games are you looking to emulate in a PbtA styled game? I don't know that I'm capable of answering that. What really is OSR? It's long since grown beyond just republishing early D&D rules while dodging copyright law. I can generally recognize the tech that defines ...

Un-PbtAing Games
I had a dream where someone was running wildly successful kickstarters to publish OSR versions of Urban Shadows, Monsterhearts, and other popular PbtA games. I, unfortunately, didn't get see how they were converting the mechanics that actually make those games work. How would you do it? Could you ta...

Save Summer!
I just released a new game called “Save Summer”. It’s a simple-as-can-be game about teenaged lifeguards trying to save their beloved community pool from being turned into a parking lot by the evil health club that was built next door. Think Empire Records But with a pool. It’s on Itch https://wastel...
