That was a good answer but that wasn't the part of my question I was looking for an answer on. I was wanting to know how to go about implementing homebrew content in one shots and campaigns.

Can you be more specific? A lot of one shots and campaigns ARE homebrew.

I guess it's more like adding custom content/items/classes to games like D&D or Genesys and how to balance them. Like last year I was in a con game that was D&D but the person running it had completely changed everything. They included custom classes and races and just used the D&D rule set. It was a little difficult to get into because of how much new content they added.

I'm still playing catch-up, but thank you for fielding my question on not letting the next campaign steal the thunder from the current one! We're in the "need to pick a GM and a system" camp, so some communication is inevitable, but I like your "no emotional investment" angle. I think that's my key takeaway... do the bare minimum necessary mechanical planning, but nothing that smacks of story, setting, or characters.
