This is one of my favorite episodes of the series.
I am a sucker for Time Travel stories, and this one is great.

This story is an example of the Butterfly Effect, as the Enterprise-C is a lynchpin in the TNG timeline.
I really like Captain Garret, and was sad that we never get to see or know more about her in other episodes.
I also feel like this episode fixes Yar's death in Skin of Evil, an episode, that you know I have no love for.

I enjoyed the alternative timeline and the dilemma about sending the Enterprise-C back or not.

As for Yar going back in time...well there are consequences for things like this.
I don't recall if we have that episode in the collection, but if not, I will point it out, when it comes up in our viewing.

This episode did a lot of things right. It's a good time travel episode where they didn't get too weird or just hand-wave away inconsistencies. The effects of one moment in time ripple out over the course of 20 years. We see characters are different, though fundamentally the same. I love that Picard trusts Guinan and that the crew of the Enterprise C are all determined to make things right. Hell, they even made Christopher MacDonald likeable. I didn't know anyone could do that. What really struck me about this episode is that Starfleet went 20 years without an Enterprise. What was the flagship between Enterprise C and D?

I love this episode, too -- great on story and rich in lore. Good question about the interstitial flagship, PK! I never thought about that before!

The Federation is pretty loose about the term Flagship.

Other ships at times have been Flagships. We don't know if Enterprise-C was the flagship of that time, and if so, then it likely transferred to another ship.

Holy shit this episode is so, so good.

Nothing much to add, except this is also quietly a really pretty great Wesley episode. He's a soldier with none of the hesitation or self-doubt Wesley walks around with in evidence, but also completely drained of any joy or wonder that we associate strongly with that character. When it's firing, this show accomplishes so much by trusting us to connect the dots on our own sometimes.

And, seriously, "that'll be the day." Suck it, Kirk.

I really like the Guinan/Worf discussion at the beginning. It shows some nice bits of both of their personalities, and shows the ongoing connections that the crew is making with one another over time.

I have the same problem with Christopher McDonald in this one that Jim had with Corbin Bernsen in the last one. I can't not think of Shooter McGavin.

A lot of the TNG episodes I remember well were from when I rewatched the series in reruns later, but this is one of the first ones that was really vivid from the time I first watched it when I was in high school. Don't do the math on that one.

It's also kind of interesting that the premise of the episode is very similar to the premise of the reboot movies. What happens if a ship isn't part of history any more? And it seems like the core precepts of Starfleet and people's personalities were more stable than in the Kelvin timeline. I know, that's a whole other can of gagh.

This is definitely a cornerstone TNG episode. This is what it looks like when everything is aligned properly.
