No Red Herrings is such an important thing.

Like you said, it makes players distrust everything.

And slows the game to a crawl.

I'd love a game where the clue finding roll successes lead to more and more esoteric clues. Finding a matchbox with a bar name on is basic. Finding a matchbox of an unusual manufacturer and knowing that only one bar orders them, or with a critical success finding a single dropped match and recognizing it's manufacturer.

Basically establishing mastery through narrative rewards.

I've played with GMs who do that sort of thing based on the "Notice" roll.

Fail - get just enough to tell you where to look for more clues.

Succeed: get the matchbook

Great Success: get the knowledge of the esoteric matchbook manufacturer.

During the podcast there was mention of some doc that the Fear the Boot crew made. Anyone got a link to that?

Ah, I found the podcast where they were talking about it, way back in episode 178.

Their sample "What's Really Going On" doc is here, but it's just...you know...a couple paragraphs of text. As mentioned above, they discuss the concept of it in Episode 178 - GM and player notes, but that particular example is discussed in Episode 209 – game pacing.

The whole FtB resources page is here. Down at the bottom is their "Group Template" stuff, which got a recent mention somewhere in the MMPverse, but I don't remember exactly where. :(
