Fantasy Appalachia

Post by shades of eternity »

On another thread, it got me thinking. an Appalachia game could have serious potential. The Hat Fields and the Mccoys, giants (that might be where Paul Bunyan originally came from), witches, and trickster anthropomorphic rabbits in a keep on the borderlands environment could have serious potential. then you add the cultural mixing of the north, south, African mythology, and Cherokee and other tribes and whammo, a seriously unique environment. However, feel seriously underqualified in this environment so throwing it out there to see where it leads.

have you read the Silver John stories (about a wandering hero with a guitar with silver strings) where he meets Appalacian magic (paizo xollwcted them as part of Planet Stories)

and the podcast Old Gods of Appalacia is also good inspiration

I'm going to drop a link to a friend's novella that he calls "rural fantasy" (as opposed to urban fantasy), but "Appalachia mysticism" could be applied as a label as well. It's quite a hoot to read, and Patrick's voice in his prose always carries humor with it. If you spend the whopping 99 cents on the ebook, get ready for some chuckles and maybe a belly laugh or two.

I think his story is a good example of what could be done with the setting you're referring to.

Enough of me blathering on. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BQR5LBO/

Looks awesome. :)

I put some feelers out on other forums and they've been surprisingly chatty, so posting the links here.

The Apocalypse World campaign I played in with Vincent and Meg was 'Windmills of Appalachia'; our Hardhold was atop a mountain ridge among abandoned wind turbines. I was a Chopper whose crew rode around on tricked-out 4-wheel ATVs. It was great.

The main issue I'd expect to encounter with something like that is issues of colonialism wrt indigenous people and slavery/racsim that would at least need to be covered in your lines/veils or setting documents. That's true of any US historical setting, mostly, though. I'm a fan of the 'Southern gothic' stuff and it'd make a strong setting for a dark fantasy campaign with the proper nods to safety and inclusion.

Very late response, but I've spent the last year too fatigued to work on or follow game design stuff. I'm curious if you've done any work on this setting, it sounded pretty cool to me.
