First post - introduction and thanks

Post by Malefic7m »

First of all, thank you for some of my favorite podcasts - and podcast people, including the clever podcast listeners! While I'm late to the party my listening habits changed tremendously when I had to move for family reasons - and in the same turn of events changed jobs, to one where podcast-consuming is really good. I'm ajoùr with Pandas talking games and the Misdirected Mark-podcast, and I found the latter because of a gift given to Sean and Brett at the Gaming and BS-podcast.

Since I had to change cards at Patreon I remembered to support this podcast network as well, and apologies for not managing to do it sooner. The enormous backlog made hours at work fly by!

I'm from Norway and play mainly american modern games (PbtA, FitD), some older "indie games" (Burning Wheel) and a curious ensamble of small games, and off course a couple of the norwegian games. While I have game design aspirations I have only made a few small games on deadlines.

At the moment I'm Keeper'ing Monster of the Week and playing in a game of Wicked Ones (and D&D), and I'm reading/playtesting a game for a friend.

My hope and aspirations of registering here is to at least provide questions and promts to the delightful Pandas (i.e. those Pandas talking about games.)

Welcome to the forums! I'm curious about your opinion on Wicked Ones. I really liked the pitch and backed it on Kickstarter. but I didn't quite gel with the game once it came out and I read through the book, so I haven't yet played it!

Welcome!

Thank you for listening and for joining up.

We would love some Panda topics and questions, any time you have them.

I am curious about the Norwegian games you are playing. Being in the US means we don't really hear about RPGs from different countries. Can you tell us about a few of your favorites?

Thanks for the hearthy welcome, which having heard quite a few of the different people involved in the network on the different podcasts! You all seem like a welcoming bunch, and I really appreciate the focus on health and safety, including self-care for men. My favorite parts of the podcasts isn't Phil and Sendas magnificent bubbling chemestry, but Phil talking about his bike! <3

I've yet to navigate the forums, but I have found the topic suggestion page for Pandas Talking Games, so I will add some suggestions there, but I'll briefly answer the other questions here as well.

We've just started with Wicked Ones, and I'm playing with someone I've played A LOT of Blades in the Dark with, and we find it fun and a bit scary. We like that you're set up for danger ("failure") even a bit more than BitD, and the dynamics of the Cycle of Play. I can comment when we're a bit more into the campaign.

There's actually quite a few Norwegian Games, and I've hardly played them all:

My favorite is perhaps Fabula - which uses a D20 scaled system, with the power of roll-recoqnition and kind of a bell curve of results. It's fast paced and it's methods include player setting scenes, and innovative scenario structure and is both great for adults and kids. (I've worked in summer schools and a few fridays game mastering for kids 10-18, with up to 22 year olds). Tomas HV Mørkrid is making a new edition, so I won't spoil to much, but might be able to bring it to Big Bad Con or another one, when restirctions and work permits.

Matthijs Holter has made at least one which the Gauntlet Community people are fans of Society of Dreamers, a game of societies secretly fighting "mnemnocytter" (dream creatures), Archipelago, and a few co-projects with americans Love in the Time of Seið(Jason Morningstar) and a playset of instructions with Emely Care Boss, yet the Emily Care Boss.

Itras by (eng. Itra's City) 1920s surrealism, card-resolution ("yes, and" ; "No, but", "yes, but", etc) and Chance Cards that add to the surrelism, including "everyone changes roles to the left".

Vandrerne a down-to-earth fantasy game about rangers working to preserve knowledge of the islands in a world plagued with recurring magic storms that changes up everything about geography,, and more.

Harde Menn (tough guys doing heists), Hevn (revenge genré) - Kaare Berg, a Forge-specialist now in the midst of making a horror triology.

Tale (PbtA Fantasy) - haven't read or played, pretty standard, but the character sheet is the diploma from the adventurer's guild

KVAD - pseudo-Viking game where you play and then make your own story (Kvad) in the style of Snorre Sturlason. Lot's of different inspirations, including Burning Wheel, Drunken's & Dragons, Ironnsworn, etc. Quite uniquue and a young(ish) person made it and it could just as well have been a heartbreaker, but evolved into something that stands on it's own. There's some cool thematic mechanics, like how you can give up life thread (years) for success.

We also have a lot of small games and we also invented the "role playing poetry"-style. ;)

Some "small games" includes Cristine, about being a single parent to a child with downs syndrome, I, a toilet roll (inspired by a indie Vs trad-discussion), Intil vi sinker (Until we sink) and Livet's Høst (Autumn of life). I'm not sure if many are available here, but there's probably a bit about the milleu: https://norwegianstyle.wordpress.com/

Personally I've done little actual design, but I have a love story game based on poker, which includes 'bluffing' and a (bad) game (that deserves a revision) concerning the community in a crisis situation, inspired by a real case. I've also read and commented and playtestet quite a few game (ideas).

There's also more mechanics heavy games, and off course Adventurer's League Chapters for D&D 5th and rather many OSR people. Many of us enjoy games like For the Queen, Witch to Lindisfarne, The Scroll, etc. We're quite familiar with american games, and now even swedish games. The Nordic Larp scene is strong, and Call of Cthluhu is popular at conventions (and my first game).

Wow, thanks for the list of cool games! The only ones I was previously familiar with were the Matthijs Holter games and Itras By, though I'd only heard of the latter but never played it. A bunch of cool stuff to check out!
